Poovalingum (Pooven) Moodley is an international human rights and environmental lawyer from South Africa and a lifelong social justice activist. He co-founded the Earthrise Collective, weaving ancient wisdom, activism and alternatives, and was previously Executive Director of Natural Justice, representing indigenous and local communities across Africa in defending their territories of life. Pooven has also led campaigns at ActionAid, directed Oxfam in South Africa, and contributed to global struggles since the anti-apartheid movement at age 14. He serves on the Council of the ICCA Consortium, chairs the Defending the Territories of Life stream, and sits on the Boards of Awana Digital, the Institute for Natural Law, and 350.org. In 2023, he was part of the coalition awarded the United Nations Human Rights Prize for securing recognition of the Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment. He is currently establishing the Centre for Environmental Justice in Africa with the University of Pretoria.
